Today's show 08/03/12

Congratulations on a new record! Yesterday's web page update was the latest EVER in all of the years that I have been sending these messages to you. I can normally expect to find the page updated by late afternoon, but at 19:15 last night it had still not been done. It was, however, updated by 10:15 this morning, so perhaps the Jeremy Vine Show nightshift did it. However, we must all remember that "the programme holds the right to publish website content at a time convenient to it" and that we - the TV Licence Tax payers - have no right to complain about this, and anybody who does will end up on the BBC's Naughty Step with me.

So while we wait oh, so patiently for somebody get their finger out of their backside and do the job for which I pay them, let's look at some other BBC news that you won't be discussing today. Let's start with this, but note that the Telegraph's headline may be misconstrued so let me clarify: This is toast as in drinks, not toast as in with butter and marmalade:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/bbc/9126618/BBC-expenses-Radio-2-boss-billed-for-toast-to-cost-cutters.html
BBC expenses: Radio 2 boss billed for toast to cost-cutters
A senior BBC executive, Bob Shennan, billed the corporation £220 for drinks as a thank you to staff charged with cutting costs, according to newly published expense bills. The Radio 2 controller made the claim in June last year for drinks for eight colleagues who helped implement ways to cut spending at the public broadcaster by £700million. The reason for the drinks bill submitted by the former controller of BBC Radio 5 Live, whose total remuneration package is £218,800, was given as “DGF thank you drinks for journalism”.

I am sure that somebody at the BBC thinks that this was money well spent, but I don't.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012/mar/06/bbc-cbeebies-cbbc-epg
BBC boss says Sky does not give CBBC and CBeebies prominence on EPG
A senior BBC executive has accused BSkyB of reneging on its obligation to give public service channels such as CBeebies and CBBC "due prominence" on its electronic programme guide. BBC director of policy and strategy, John Tate, said CBeebies, the BBC's pre-school service, is now 13th on the EPG list of children's channels on Sky, with CBBC in 14th. Above it are channels such as Nicktoons, Boomerang and six Disney services.

BSkyB ... that'll be part of the Murdoch Empire - the same Murdoch Empire that the BBC has attacked on every possible occasion over the past year or so. No connection, surely? Isn't all fair in love, war and journalism?

Note that both articles start with "A senior BBC executive...". Is there any other kind?

11:55, here we go:

1) REMPLOY - 36 out of 54 of special Remploy factories, where disabled people have traditionally been given secure jobs, are to close. The government says they’re losing huge amounts of money and that money would be better spent helping far more disabled people find jobs in the open jobs market : I note the sentence "Labour called the decision "the wrong plan at the wrong time" from the BBC news page, but this is not the first time that Remploy's factories have been under threat unfortunately. Take a look at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6965756.stm which dates from August 2007 and says "Workers are to hold a month of marches and meetings aimed at keeping open 43 factories which employ disabled staff. The campaign will start in Aberdeen and end outside the Labour Party annual conference in Bournemouth next month.". This was followed by http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7118979.stm from November 2007 which says "Twenty-eight of Remploy's 83 factories employing disabled workers are to close, Work and Pensions Secretary Peter Hain has said.". From the BBC's coverage I can only come to the conclusion that Labour thought they had the right plan at the right time back in 2007. Will you be asking Peter Hain about this today? Just for some balance, you understand. I thought not. Next...

2) OVERWEIGHT - Should a mother ever tell her daughter (or son for that matter) that they are overweight? Find out more in this article from the Daily Mail : The Daily Mail returns! Hooray! I am over 50, my mother is in her 80s and she still tells me I'm overweight. Unfortunately she thinks you are rude so she doesn't listen to your programme. Next...

3) RESPECT - Finally, how should people show respect for soldiers who die in Afghanistan if they don’t agree with the war? : I manage, and I can only hope that none of your listeners will be waiting for instructions on how to do this. Next...

4) LOST - Do you remember the old SOS messages before the news on Radio 4? A Manchester man who’s dangerously ill is desperately trying to trace his long lost son. Find out more in this article from the Manchester Evening News : No, I don't remember them. And I am not the chap you are looking for. Sorry.

The Jeremy Vine Show - escaping the BBC cuts, unfortunately

  1. I bet David Protano is glad you're not his son, Jason. I'd be ashamed of sad little person with OBVIOUSLY nothing better to do with your time than send e-mails critising other people. Please feel free to respond to this. My e-mail address is: sadlittlepoisonoustw@t.co.uk

  2. Many thanks for using your valuable time to leave these comments.

Millionaire Jeremy Vine is ALWAYS saying "tell us what you think", and that is all that I am doing. Or am I only supposed to do that if I subscribe to his, and your, views?

    Cheers!

  3. This message that has been left is very malicious. The guy is on his deathbed trying to find his son - have some passion. Your message made little sense other than it's obvious intent.

  4. If number 3 is finally, quote, what is number 4?
There sure are some sheople about today!

  5. I take it that you mean my message is malicious Ben? Is that correct? If so, I disagree.

I do not remember the Radio 4 SOS messages.

I am not the chap that Vine is looking for, and I apologised for that. If I knew him I would contact him, but I don't.

What else would you like me to do?

  6. I do hope you find something better to do with your time. Cheer up boreblogger!

  7. Why don't you start by not listening to his show!

Why do you emphasise that he is a 'Millionaire'? What difference does it make how wealthy Jeremy Vine is?
He has had a long professional career in the media, not just a 2 hour slot on Radio 2!

  8. I did think that you could have acknowledged that, for once, the JV show was doing something that might well make a difference. Due to the increased exposure there is a better chance that dying guy will make contact with his son.

"Why don't you start by not listening to his show!"

If you were paying attention you would have known that we don't listen to it because it is so utterly awful.

  9. To Anonymous:

My apologies for the late response. As suggested I was busy doing something better with my time....

I don't listen to his show for the reasons explained in the heading on my blog.

As for Millionaire ... it was a trap to get a reaction, that apparently worked!

Your defence of him is admirable. Personally, I find him to be biased, partisan, speculative, misinformed, rude, false, hard of hearing when it suits him and almost completely detached from The Real World in which the rest of us have to live. But my opinion only counts if you choose to read it.

If you feel sufficiently passionate that his programme is a good thing then please let me know and I will make arrangements for us to have a debate about it. I'm quite happy to read and respond to reasoned argument, but I will not get in to a personal slanging match.

Many, many comments have been left here saying that what I do is a waste of time. I cannot remember even one person saying "The JV Show is great because..." and then taking me to task over my views.

    To Stonyground:

You make a very good point about making a difference today. I missed it completely and I feel bad about that. I will try and make amends tomorrow. Many thanks for pointing it out. Do you happen to know if they found him?

I do wonder though whether where JV is now being bombarded with all sorts of "my son/daughter/mother/father/dog has gone missing" emails, but that is a line that he will have to draw.

  10. Didnt listen and I find myself avoiding it.Truth be told if JV was on straight after Chris Evans then I would never listen as I avoid Evans and some days now dont put R2 on at all.

As for the feature then it may have done some good but it is a long shot.If they really wanted to get the message out why not put it on the BBC News or 5live or the R2 show with the most listeners(and we all know that isnt the JV show) Instead JV has to surround it with stories of old SOS stories.I hope the guy finds his son but to JV this is a filler slot and as per normal,I doubt there will be an update and JV will have forgot about this when he walked out of the Studio.

    A few other points;

LL-I dont always agree with everything you say but I dont see anything harse or unfeeling about what you said in 4 and I agree with you on the fact about the next one or 10 or 100 or what about all the runaways or missing persons.Which one is JV or more so his producer going to decide to help and which ones not too tell us about??

As for JV salary then it is funded by the BBC tax which we dont have a chance to opt in or out of and he is frequently having a go at Fireman and Police Officers for there pay but yet he gets paid what he does for what he does.

Ive said before you can pay a Million Pound to a Solider or Jeremy Vine but only to one of them and I would like to see someone justify giving it to JV!!

Anon-this passed a 40 min bus ride so no time wasted.(I wonder if Anon is the BBC's Governments Work Seekers Work Experience Trainee) and he got in trouble for not updating the website yesterday;-)

  11. Just thought why was this story in Slot 4 which is the 'and finally slot'.Anyone who has knowledge of the JV show knows that the top slot is at Midday and then secondary story upto 1pm.1pm is then Slot 3 which is moneysaving saving or something else.Slot 4 is always the least important to 'the JV Production Team' which is why the story was in the same slot as Terry 'Goodnight John Boy' Walton allotment. Why wasnt this story in slot 3 or 2?? Ive said on here before about who decides in the production team which are the most important and what order they should go.

Just as JV can say anything he likes on Twitter then this blog is the daily equivelent with the difference is that JV will block you on Twitter.'He's asking us what we think' so we are telling him.

An interesting question for the BBC is tell me what proportion in % and monitary terms the JV costs in the Licence Fee and refund it to me and discount it in future years and my part of the agreement is to never listen again and I think thats a fair compromise.

The BBC missed a great chance with Digital to go Subscription based and get rid of the TV licence. But we all know that the BBC wouldnt get the amount of money or viewers they do and so we are stuck with it.The BBC makes some good programmes but I shouldnt pay for channels like BBC 3 that I dont ever watch and fund teenagers going on holiday getting drunk.

    I rest my case M'Lord.

  13. When your detractors are such complete idiots that is a clue that you are doing something right. Are you the same Anonymous that loves exclamation marks so much that you use them when a question mark would be appropriate?
