Today's show 19/12/11

Today's issue that affects me: I've just discovered that our washing machine is not spinning at the end of the wash cycle. Time to call a man, I think.

The Monday before Christmas, and you are lucky to be handed two "news" stories on a plate...

1) MARRIAGE TAX BREAKS - There’s a row over tax breaks for marriage. Nick Clegg has accused the Tories of wanting to take us back to the 1950s : Being married, you can probably guess my views on this. However, Nick Clegg is wrong with his 1950s analogy as the Married Man's Tax Allowance was only withdrawn in 2000, and I made use of it during the late 1980s. The odd thing is that neither Nick Clegg or the Tories are forcing anybody to get married and it remains the free choice of each couple, but I guess that you consider that the driving of another wedge in to the coalition is far more important. Next...

2) CHILDLESS AT CHRISTMAS - Amanda Patel says that being childless at Christmas hurts the most. Find out more in this article from the Daily Mail : God bless the Daily Mail! We have no children, so many thanks for giving us prior knowledge of our forthcoming painful Christmas. I'll Tweet you on Christmas Day to let you know just how bad it is. Or not. Next...

3) BUYING PRESENTS ONLINE - Did you think you’d save time by buying your Christmas presents online, only to end up spending hours queuing at the sorting office? : I work from home, and so it is very rare for me to miss a home delivery. And on the rare occasions that I have been to our local sorting office I have never seen a queue. Next...

4) KIM JONG-IL - Following the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, we give him the ‘This Is Your Life’ treatment : Another murdering dictator dies, the North Korean people are inconsolable, and apparently I am supposed to be interested. Sorry Jeremy, I'm not.

Well, that was quick. Good here, isn't it?

I'm still waiting for your suggestions for my Jeremy Vine Show 2011 Top 10 Highlights. I'd be grateful if you could let me have those in the next day or two as I would really like to compare it with my list!

There are going to be alot of people hurting at Christmas!! Homeless People for a start.People who have lost someone this year, people who may have illnesses.
Comparing it to JV's example,How about single people who are on there own who dont have anyone to share Christmas with.Believe me there's a few people I wld like to share it with but I wont get the chance or choice to.As Im working Christmas Eve and Boxing Day and the family is 200 miles away so I'll be on my own for Christmas Day.
What I want to know is why JV & some DM 'journo' think that because not having kids but having a partner to share it with is worse than anything else!!

In the Christmas spirit then my 3 most loathered persons are in order 1:James Cordon 2:JV. 3:Jeremy Clarkson

Well JV missed a cracker of a story this morning, re how the alleged comedy duo, the Krankies, used to be swingers. I might have listened to that. what did they do; throw their bike clips into a pile?

Have just received the Ken Bruce autobiography and its as funny as the man himself. can recommend it. I laughed out loud at some of the comments, just like when reading the late-great Ray Moore's autobiogs years ago

I listened from 1:10 in as you suggested and the featured 90-minute wait in a queue for a box of chocolate. I am left wondering how anybody who orders stuff on-line is expecting their goods to be delivered. But then that would mean people thinking for themselves, and we know that most of JV's listeners are not capable of that. We have email, perhaps the answer is the ejiffybag.

how ridiculous, if you are out you can arrange for it to be delivered to a post office or arrange another delivery date.
And then JV suggests people on benefits can't go after a certain date. JV, receiving lots of benefits via the public purse.

Should that be Amanda pLatel?

On the discussion about tax breaks for married couples as opposed to people who don't feel the need to make their stable and long term relationship official. I think that the government has no business using tax incentives to coerce people on how to live their lives. In short, if people's lifestyle causes no harm to others then it is non of the government's effing business.

The notion that Christmas without children must be totally wretched is simply baffling. Mrs Stony and I had several wonderful Christmases before our daughter was born. It is true that having children to spoil makes the whole thing even more special but FFS, if you really feel so left out, spoil someone else's kids or do some charity work or something.
